Metal things, mostly
Who doesn’t like the attention to detail and long-acquired skill that combine in what bike people talk about as —- some variation of “the craft of frame building”? There’s usually a big gap between what I like and value and what connoisseurs like and value. Some of my best friends are connoisseurs, but one of the things they value a lot and I don’t value at all, is scarcity. If builder X...

Last of the shorter knickers
Phased-out shorter knickers.
The current knickers are longer in the legs and baggier with elastic closures at the bottom. The old ones (shown here) are fine, but the new ones: We likem, so if you can’t add to cart, we’re out of that color/size combo.
Here’s the link
The newer styles will be available next week.
Olde vs. Knew:
First the oldes. Shorter, slimmer legs, velcro...

Staph Bykes
The new site doesn’t have staff bikes up—-yet—-and Dave says he gets requests. So I shot the bikes that are out front today, and they follow. Plus there’s some other stuff at the end. THis won’t stay up here for long.
Dave’s Homer. Was supposed to be a burnt orange for a customer. Came out rootbeery, and Dave said, “Hey, that’s for me!” and...

Animal life & death on Mt. Diablo and The Red...
This isn’t the new model for posts here. It’s nothing, just practice for me. It’s about my day, and not that interesting unless you were there. I’ll post over it soon enough.
My normal riding buddy is a guy named Sean, who at 42 can still run a 61-second quarter mile, and he never runs except maybe a quarter mile twice a month, and he’s done only about 8 of them in...

BUbar
The Nitto-built BackUp handlebar(BUbar)
… looks at first like a retro-cruiser bar for laid-back bike path rides, but if that’s what it was we wouldn’t have even done it because it wouldn’t be any different than a dozen other cruiser bars.
The BUbar (boo-bar or boob-ar, as you like, but not bub-ar) the only handlebar I’ve used that has more good hand positions than a drop bar. As blasphemous...

Occupy Walnut Creek
I had no idea it was coming to Walnut Creek until the day before yesterday, and these photos were shot last night. I’d just as soon move on to bike stuff, but Walnut Creek has its own Occuprotest, and since it’s just a cruise, sprint, and a skid from here, I went down there last night. I’ll make this brief. I’m still practicing posting. I’m sorry some of the photos are...

Slightly off topic, but not entirely
I had to go to New York last week for a four-hour meeting, and during some of the rest of the time I was going to go to a museum I’ve wanted to go to for a long time now, but I got waylaid and instead, then, I went to Zucotti Park, where the Occupy Wall Street protest-camp thing was (& still is) happening …
The protest is spreading, has spread to a hundred or two other cities...

Brookses
Why we sell the Brooks models we do, and not the ones we don’t. (A saddle-by-saddle summary w/pix)
We sell only leather saddles, and it’s been that way since the start (more than 17 years). Odd as it may seem now,in the mid’90s you had to dig for Brookses. According to the distributor at the time, we sold about 4x as many Brooks saddle as anybody else. As a consequence, Brooks treated us with...
